Explore The Best Browning X-Bolt 2 Whitetail Rifles

Published on October 29, 2026  by Jace Bauserman

We could argue in circles about what Browning is most famous for. Is it for their reliable semi-automatic shotguns, classic over-and-under shotgun builds, or smooth-cycling bolt-action rifles? Answers will vary depending on the game you hunt, or the orange discs you try to break. Personally, when I think of Browning, my thoughts rush to bolt-action rifles, with Western big-game hunting at the forefront. I also think of the iconic Buckmark and what this logo represents.

What can’t be argued is what the distinctive deer-shaped branding represents. The Buckmark logo is instantly recognizable to gun enthusiasts and can be found everywhere: windshields, water bottles, hoodies, shirts, tattoos, etc. The Buckmark has become so much more than a simple logo. It represents Browning’s unwavering commitment to producing high-quality firearms, a tradition of innovation, and generations of hunting heritage and history.

The Buckmark logo is a one-word, two-syllable noun featuring a stylized outline of a white-tailed deer’s head, showcasing the antlers in an elegant, sweeping style. The white-tailed deer is a game animal storied in big-game hunting lore. Huntable in 44 states, the whitetail is the king of all big-game animals. Each year, more than 9 million hunters hit the whitetail woods with a rifle.

Many of those hunters choose a Browning rifle. Here are four of my favorite Browning X-Bolt 2 builds for whitetail.

The Workhorse: X-Bolt 2 Speed

The workhorse of the X-Bolt 2 lineup, Browning’s X-Bolt 2 Speed hits an under-$1,530 (caliber-dependent) price point and packs enough bells and whistles to satisfy any whitetail hunter.

I just took the X-Bolt 2 Speed to Scotland on a once-in-a-lifetime trip for rutting red deer. A month before my trip across the pond, I dumped a 340-inch bull elk from 264-yards with the same rifle. In December, I'll take the rifle on a whitetail hunt. As noted, the X-Bolt 2 Speed is a meat-and-potatoes bolt-action that’s priced right, hyper-accurate, and as tough as they come.

X-Bolt 2 Speed: Favorite Features

For me, it all starts with the Vari-Tech stock. I like to tinker, and this stock gives the X-Bolt 2 Speed room for customization. The adjustable top comb ensures exact eye-to-scope alignment; you get two grip angle options, and an easily adjustable length of pull. I’m also keen on the lower-profile receiver, spiral-fluted bolt, fluted sporter-contour barrel, and a more ergonomic bolt handle that makes the 60-degree bolt lift fast.

X-Bolt 2 Speed: Two Go-To Whitetail Calibers

243 Win.: Both my boys took down their first bucks with a bolt-action 243 Win. The 243 Win is a whitetail whacker out to 300 yards. I like 90-95 grain quality bullets. Bullets in this grain weight will leave the 22-inch X-Bolt 2 Speed barrel at around 2,900 fps. The caliber is accurate, produces minimal recoil, and crushes deer.

270 Win.: Like the 243 Win., the 270 Win. is a legendary whitetail caliber. Introduced in 1925, the .277” bullet diameter promises flat shooting, making the caliber effective for longer shots. If your whitetail dreams take you West, where a 300-plus-yard shot is possible, go with Browning’s 140-grain Long Range Pro Hunter.

X-Bolt 2 Speed Notable Specs (243 Win.)

  • Barrel Length: 22 in.
  • Overall Length: 42 in.
  • Weight: 6 pounds, 12 ounces
  • Magazine: Detachable
  • Twist Rate: 10 in.
  • Recoil Pad: Inflex 1.25 in.

The Classic: X-Bolt 2 Hunter

There’s something about a checkered walnut stock with a satin finish and a non-reflective, matte blued finish that screams WHITETAIL. Like the X-Bolt 2 Speed, the Hunter features the adjustable, multi-lever DLX trigger. Another top-end X-Bolt 2 Hunter feature is the bolt unlock button, that boosts safety during chamber checking and unloading.

X-Bolt 2 Hunter: Favorites

I watched Browning’s Rafe Nielsen dump a New Mexico bull with the classy X-Bolt 2 Hunter. Nielsen was in a cramped, unfavorable shooting position — one whitetail hunters often find themselves in. He had no sticks and couldn’t get prone. Still, the sporter contour barrel delivered the 300 Win. Mag. bullet with supreme accuracy. This bolt-action rifle shoots as good as it looks, will take a beating, and keep meat in your freezer.

X-Bolt 2 Hunter: Two Go-To Whitetail Calibers

308 Win.: One of the most popular whitetail calibers of all time, the 22-inch-barreled X-Bolt 2 Hunter chambered in 308 Win. can handle the many grain-weight bullets available in this caliber.

30-06 Sprg.: Like the 308 Win., 30-06 Sprg. bullet grain weight offerings are many. Ranging from 110 to 220 grains, you can match your bullet to your environment. The 22-inch barrel keeps the rifle compact; perfect for treestands, ground blinds, and shooting towers. The 30-06 Sprg. is a favorite of many whitetail hunters. The caliber maintains accuracy downrange, and proper bullets deliver maximum energy on impact.

  • Overall Length: 42-3/4 in.

  • Magazine: Detachable

The Show Pony: X-Bolt 2 Medallion Maple

Don’t read the headline and think this bolt-action is more about looks than accuracy and dependability. Though a work of art with a AAAA white maple stock with rosewood caps and a gloss finish, it ably blends wood nostalgia with modern technology that drops deer in their tracks.

X-Bolt 2 Medallion Maple: Favorite Features

The X-Bolt 2 Medallion Maple's defining feature is its exquisite maple stock, which offers a unique look and feel. I love the sleek grip design that provides excellent handling in various conditions. The adjustable trigger adds a personalized touch and enhances the shooting experience, while the free-floating barrel adds precision and makes every shot count.

6.5 Creedmoor: The 6.5 Creedmoor is rapidly gaining popularity among deer hunters for its accuracy and excellent ballistic performance. With a 22-inch barrel, it can launch 140-grain bullets at around 2,700 fps, making it effective at distances beyond 500 yards. Its mild recoil allows for quick follow-up shots, which is invaluable in the field.

6.8 Western: The 6.8 Western is my favorite do-all caliber. I’ve killed everything with it. The caliber brings a modern edge to whitetail hunting. Designed for long-range performance, it offers impressive energy and trajectory, maximizing effectiveness on deer-sized game. With a 24-inch barrel, this short-action caliber pushes heavy-for-caliber bullets at high speeds, and speed, friends, kills.

  • Barrel Length: 24 in.
  • Overall Length: 44 in.

The Shorty: X-Bolt 2 Speed SPR Mossy Oak Bottomland

When I close my eyes and think of whitetail hunting, my brain takes me to a hardwood forest surrounded by feed-them-forward food plots. I’m in a lock-on stand without a shooting rail, and my eyes bounce left to right, looking for any hint of movement. I'm holding a Browning X-Bolt 2 Speed SPR in Mossy Oak Bottomland. Bottomland camo and whitetail hunting go together like Babe Ruth and baseball. This versatile pattern also helps the Vari-Tech composite stock disappear in the hardwood habitat whitetails favor.

X-Bolt 2 Speed SPR Mossy Oak Bottomland: Favorite Features

The X-Bolt 2 Speed SPR Mossy Oak Bottomland is available in eight calibers with 18-22-inch barrels. Remove the radial muzzle brake, expose the 5/8”-24 threading, add a suppressor, and you’re still toting a not-too-long rifle. Or leave the brake in place and stay short and ultra-compact. That’s what I do. I also love the Smoked Bronze Cerakote finish, which protects better than traditional bluing or bare stainless steel.

6.5 PRC: The 6.5 PRC is engineered for long-range performance. With its high ballistic coefficient, this caliber can deliver 140-grain bullets at around 2,900 fps, making it highly effective for whitetails at extended distances. Its mild recoil allows for faster follow-up shots in the field.

7mm Rem. Mag.: The 7mm Rem Mag. offers versatility and power. With a 22-inch barrel, it can propel a 160-grain bullet at about 2,800 fps, ensuring effective energy transfer on impact and making it ideal for taking down larger deer. Its ability to perform well across various ranges makes it a highly sought-after caliber among deer hunters.
