Don't lie for the other guy.

Don't lie for the other guy.

Convicted felons, minors, persons determined by a court of law to be "mentally defective" and certain others are prohibited by law from buying a firearm. If a friend or relative asks you to lie to the federal government or to a federally licensed firearms retailer to try to buy a gun for him/her, don't do it! It's not worth 10 years in jail.

Understanding the importance of cooperating with law enforcement, the firearms industry through the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) -- the industry's trade association -- has for more than a decade partnered with the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) to assist law enforcement in educating firearms retailers to be better able to identify and deter illegal straw purchases and to raise public awareness that straw purchasing is a serious crime. For more information go to www.dontlie.org.

Firearms safety depends on you.

Firearms safety depends on you.

From the time you pick up a firearm, you become part of a system over which you have complete control. You are the only part of the system that can make a gun safe—or unsafe. Hunting and target shooting are among the safest of all sports. Many tools are provided that are intended to make firearms even safer.

One of these is the "Firearms Safety Depends on You" brochure provided by Browning and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). This brochure helps by emphasizing the basics of safe gun handling and storage and by reminding you that you are the key to firearms safety. View the entire brochure by going to the NSSF Website "Literature" page

Preventing thefts of firearms from vehicles.

Preventing thefts of firearms from vehicles.

In response to the rising number of gun thefts from vehicles, the National Shooting Sports Foundation has produced a brochure designed to remind gun owners to take precautions if they must leave a firearm in their car or truck for any period of time. The “Firearms Safety in Vehicles” brochure joins NSSF’s lineup of educational materials reminding gun owners that it’s their responsibility to keep their firearms out of the wrong hands. The brochure emphasizes this key safety rule: “Your firearm must be under your control at all times; when it’s not, it should be placed in locked storage and out of sight.”

Fire Prevention.

Fire Prevention.

The target shooting and hunting community prides itself on being safe and responsible with firearms in all situations — from using them outdoors to storing them safely at home. Sometimes, however, unusual conditions such as extremely dry environments require an extra level of awareness and safety on the part of shooters. Wildfires have many possible causes and during dry and hot weather conditions shooters’ use of certain ammunition and targets could accidentally ignite a wildfire.

Know the rules and regulations related to shooting in fire-prone areas; to minimize the risk of fire by not using ammunition that is steel-jacketed or has steel-core components, and by not using tracer rounds or exploding targets; to remember that a vehicle or ATV's hot exhaust pipes could ignite a fire; and to properly extinguish campfires, among other fire-prevention measures. Wildfires have many possible causes, and target shooters and hunters who are aware of their surroundings, cautious and responsible can make sure they are not among them.
