What conditions are the different colors of shooting lenses for?

Usually, good quality shooting glasses come with interchangeable lenses. Many shooters prefer only one or two colors. Here are the conditions for each color:

Smoke: For bright days, rifle or pistol shooters. Reduces light, transmits all colors at the same level. Does not enhance orange targets.

Clear: Poor lighting, indoor ranges and eye protection. No contrast. An excellent safety lens when hand loading.

Yellow: For overcast foggy days or late afternoon. Good for rifle or pistol shooting with black and white targets. Can be used in indoor ranges.

Orange: Excellent for orange clay targets. Dull, cloudy days, dusk or dawn. Enhances the orange of the target.

Vermillion: For green backgrounds. Highlights orange, dampens green. Good for those who see orange poorly, or with red-green color deficiency.

Brown: Light reducing. Good all around for shooting orange targets on bright, glaring days with open background.
