All 50 U.S. states have at least one huntable species of deer, which is remarkable. However, one deer species reigns supreme and is North America’s most sought-after big-game animal.  

Enter Odocoileus virginianus — better known to deer nuts as the white-tailed deer. Found from Canada to Mexico to Maine to Florida, the whitetail’s distribution, and ability to adapt to various habitats and weather conditions is impressive.  

The range of the deer is one reason it’s the most hunted big-game species on the planet. The other reason is that the whitetail is an incredible animal. From typical heavy 10 points to gnarly drop-tine bucks, the headgear of a whitetail can differ significantly from buck-to-buck. Now put yourself in a shooting house, ladder stand, etc., with a biting north wind in your face and the sight of the eastern sunrise teasing the landscape to life before your eyes, and you start to get the full picture. Few things rival deer season.
