Hell's Canyon Speed goes on a once-in-a-lifetime hunt.

Points. It takes a lot of points. When one of our acquaintances, Cody Jensen, told us he had finally drawn out on his once-in-a-lifetime elk hunt in Idaho we really wanted to see how it would play out. So Derek, our in-house photographer, quickly volunteered to document the hunt. It was a great opportunity to see how a hunt like this really works. Plus, it would be an equally good opportunity to see new Browning SPEED hunting clothing in action under the toughest, real hunting conditions. The result is this story.

"Patiently accumulating draw points . . ."

Hell's Canyon Speed Once in a Lifetime Western Archery Elk Hunt.

Browning Speed bow hunter, Cody, invited our photographer along to document his once in a lifetime archery elk hunt in Idaho. For those who don't know, a once in a lifetime hunt offers a dedicated hunter the opportunity to hunt in a prime area with a limited number of competing tag holders. Hunters will often wait many years, patiently accumulating draw points until they finally get the chance to draw out on one of these hunts.

Cody and our photographer Derek hit the mountain trails . . .  for an amazing hunting experience.

Hiking into the wilderness - Sunset on the end of the first day.

The area Cody hunted in Idaho was a designated wilderness area, which meant covering a lot of ground on foot. At the end of a long first day, this sunset was the reward.

No better way to start your morning...

It felt pretty early to be waking up after the long day of hiking the day before, but you never see these sunrises anywhere else and this is part of what makes the hunt worth it.

Deep in elk country...

Cody and Derek, our photographer, took a moment to observe a monster bull elk that dropped into a draw a few hundred yards in front of them.

Prepping the shot...

Cody and Derek ran into multiple elk on their stalks.

It was summed up this way, "A-TACS is definitely an effective camouflage pattern and with proper field craft, you can easily close the distance with your animal, many times running into game you didn't realize was there."

Hold your breath, then release. Take a moment to zoom in on this bull.

Derek saw this beast first: "Cody, it's a big one!" Cody - "It's a shooter." Derek held his breath as Cody took aim through a narrow gap in the brush.

A solid hit.

At 44 yards, Cody's shot was well setup and the arrow hit the vital area he was aiming at. The shaft of his arrow snapped as the bull took off after being hit by the broad head.

Follow the trail...

Elk are tough animals despite being less aggressive and more skittish than similarly sized game like moose. This bull took off at a swift clip and it was up to Cody and Derek to track the bull's distinctive blood trail.

Found him!

A silent fist pump marked the end of tracking the bull.

It's in the bag.

Success means more when it's the culmination of a significant amount of hard work. Even though there's a LOT more hard work at this point, you can see the look on Cody's face that sums out how we all feel at this point - satisfaction, gratitude, and maybe a little bit of exhaustion.

The next 16 hours involved field dressing the elk, hiking out to bring in the horses (the only "vehicle" allowed in the primitive area), and bringing the meat and caped head out of the wilderness.

Note - the caped head/antlers weighed in at 120 pounds!
