ABOUT THE AMERICAN - 2017
RFD-TV’s THE AMERICAN will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, for the fourth year. When the dust settles at this action-packed event, the toughest competitors in the world again will ride away with rodeo’s most significant one-day cash payout. Each event will pay $100,000 for first and $25,000 for second. Every contestant is eligible to win the event whether they received an invitation as one of the top professionals in the world, they were granted an exemption or they qualified by finishing at the top of The American Semi-Finals. The qualifiers are eligible to win an extra $1 million bonus. If a qualifying athlete can win his or her event, they will be entitled to a share of the $1,000,000..
THE SIDE POT
THE AMERICAN invites the top rodeo athletes in seven events from the PRCA, ERA, WPRA to compete for a $2 million purse in the home of the Dallas Cowboys. Anyone can qualify via the Semi-Finals – which now pays $1,000,000 – and any contestant who advances to THE AMERICAN and out-rides or out-ropes the sport’s super stars is eligible for an additional $1 million bonus on Feb. 19.
HOW TO QUALIFY FOR THE AMERICAN
Now a $1million rodeo in and of itself, The American Semi-Finals will be held at Cowtown Coliseum in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards February 14 – 17. Approximately 600 contests will compete over 4 days for the chance to advance to THE AMERICAN and compete for the $1,000,000 side pot. In addition to the competition inside Cowtown Coliseum, fans will be able to enjoy the FanZone in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards February 15 – 17th. While there, they can attend concerts, watch demonstrations, enjoy food trucks, visit The Wall That Heals - the official traveling exhibit of The Vietnam Memorial, and much more.
There are three ways to qualify for competition in THE AMERICAN. The top contestants in the world receive invitations. Additionally, a handful of exemptions are offered to the brightest rising stars and fan favorites in the sport. And finally, hopeful contestants can pay an entry fee to compete at “qualifiers” throughout the year sanctioned by Better Barrel Races, Professional Bull Riders, Ultimate Calf Roping and World's Toughest Rodeo. Last year, nearly 4,000 entries competed at 70 qualifying events to make the American Semi-Finals, where nearly 600 athletes from around the world battled for 38 byes into THE AMERICAN.
Fans can expect to see today’s most spectacular bucking horses and bulls matched against rodeo and bull riding superstars. Rodeo and bucking bull companies from across the country bring some of their best animal athletes to test the skills of the bareback, saddle bronc and bull riders.
