Review of article in Wildfowl magazine, Jun/July 2014 issue.
For the dedicated waterfowl hunter, the name Fred Zink is very familiar. He is the founder of Zink Calls and Avian-X, two highly successful game call and decoy Companies. Zink is also the host of popular hunting TV program “Avian-X.”
In the June/July issue of Wildfowl Magazine, well-known gun writer Skip Knowles penned a glowing report on the lifetime involvement of the entire Zink family in hunting and conservation.
Born in 1970 into an Ohio clan of avid hunters and guides, Fred Zink was raised on the family’s horse farm and was trapping and hunting from an early age. By his mid-teens, Fred and family were firmly focused on waterfowl, pursuing ducks and geese throughout the Midwest. Always a perfectionist, Fred would be the one to re-paint the decoys and tinker endlessly with every piece of hunting equipment from blinds to shotguns.
During a fishing trip to Lake Michigan some 30 years ago, Fred and his father dropped by to check out the US Open Goose Calling Championships and hobnobbed with some of the world’s best callers, many of whom he still counts as close friends. At age 18 Fred won the Ohio State calling title and went on to post nearly 30 more titles in the decade that followed.
Fred launched Zink Outdoors in 1998, and things literally took off from there. Working with other famous names in the waterfowl industry, Zink began to cultivate a worldwide network of contacts, customers and suppliers. Today Zink Calls and Avian-X have more than a score of full-time employees and ships some 65,000 calls annually.
Not bad for an Ohio farm boy who got his start shooting blackbirds with a BB gun over a spread of homemade decoys. And after all this success, what does Fred Zink pick when it comes to shotguns and hunting clothing? Browning, of course.
