Matt Hughes vs BJ Penn, November 20 -- An Exclusive Browning Interview
Release Date: 10/29/2010
Matt takes a break from training to talk about his upcoming fight.
This story and interview was published prior to Matt's fight with BJ Penn. The fight was a very tough one for Matt and we wish him all the best as he regroups for upcoming events -- and perhaps a hunt or two.
Here's the story written in early November:
A few days ago Matt Hughes stopped by Browning after a few weeks of intensive training in Salt Lake City. This is in preparation for the scheduled UFC match between the two former UFC champions: BJ Penn and Matt Hughes. They recently agreed to fight a third time in a welterweight bout that is a co-headliner for UFC 123 in Detroit. This is a rubber match, with the pair splitting two other encounters.
The match came together quickly and was only confirmed a few weeks ago, after Matt had already planned his fall to be in the field, not the octagon. Since the announcement, Matt has gone into high gear with his training. In this exclusive video interview -- done at the Browning offices in Morgan, Utah -- Matt gives his ideas on what he can expect in the fight and how he is feeling about it overall.
The big surprise for all of us at Browning was that we all knew that Matt had taken off the fall from fighting so he could spend time hunting. He had several major deer hunts planned which had to be rescheduled. He still has time to squeeze in a few upland hunts, but this fight took a toll on his big game plans. We know how much he really wanted to be in the field, so we're thinking he might take out his frustration on BJ Penn. That would be nice.
Matt has been a fan of Browning for years and is avid with both rifles and shotguns. In addition to the interview, Browning awarded Matt with a special Buck Mark pistol commemorating his induction into the UFC Hall of Fame . . . and we also took some time to shoot a round of skeet with Matt on the Browning range using a 28 gauge Citori.
Here's the interview:
UFC 123 is on for Nov. 20 at The Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit. The fight is headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between former champs Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Lyoto Machida on the pay-per-view portion of the evening.
B.J. Penn (15-7-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC)
Matt Hughes (45-7 MMA, 18-5 UFC).
